Genghis Cohen: LA’s Kitsch Chinese-American Classic Lands in Sunset Harbour

Sunset Harbour is getting the loudest new room of the season. Genghis Cohen, the Los Angeles Chinese-American institution that has been running on North Fairfax since 1983, is opening its first location ever outside California at 1801 Purdy Avenue, in the former Sardinia space.

The formula is gloriously throwback: tiki-inspired cocktails, a retro 1980s aesthetic, and family-style New York-Chinese classics — crab rangoon, egg rolls, queen chicken, house cocktail lo mein, orange chicken, and the pu pu platter served as it was in 1983. The one Miami adjustment the team has talked about is fresh local seafood joining the LA classics. The original room is also the one said to have inspired the Seinfeld Chinese-restaurant episode, which tells you exactly the kind of night this place is built for.

It is being brought over by Marc Rose and Med Abrous of LA's Call Mom hospitality group, with hospitality mogul Jason Pomeranc. For a neighborhood that has turned over fast this year, Genghis Cohen is the group-dinner anchor Sunset Harbour did not have.

Know before you go: Genghis Cohen, 1801 Purdy Ave, Miami Beach (Sunset Harbour). Expected to open in late 2026.
